Booking & Price

How do I book the house?

The holiday house is available year-round. The easiest way is to book directly with us through this website – no platform fees, and you have us as your direct contact. You can also find SLAPPE AV on FeWo-direkt, Atraveo and Ferienhausmiete.de.

What's included in the price?

The price includes:

  • Final cleaning
  • Electricity and water
  • Wi-Fi
  • Use of the sauna
  • In winter: pre-heating of the house before your arrival
What costs extra?
  • Bed linen and towels: Bring your own or rent from us for an extra fee – please request at least one week before arrival.
  • Firewood for the wood stove: Not included – you can buy it in the village or at petrol stations along the way.
How do I pay? Which payment methods are available?

We offer secure online payment via Stripe – encrypted and SCA-compliant:

  • PayPal
  • Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
  • Debit card (e.g. Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit)

No bank transfers or manual entry needed – after booking you'll receive a payment link by email.

When do I have to pay? (Deposit & balance)
  • Deposit: 30 % at the time of booking
  • Balance: 70 % due 30 days before arrival

If you book less than 30 days before arrival, the full amount is due at booking. Exact amounts and dates will be specified in your booking confirmation.

Is there a security deposit?

Yes. We hold a security deposit of NOK 4,000 (about €350 / £300). Important:

  • The deposit is only pre-authorised on your credit card – not actually charged.
  • Pre-authorisation takes place one day before arrival.
  • It expires automatically three days after departure, provided everything is in order.

You'll see the amount briefly held against your credit limit, but it will never actually be charged – unless there are documented damages. Please make sure your credit card has sufficient available limit.

Is there a minimum stay?

Yes, the minimum stay is three nights. The reason: final cleaning is included in the price, and shorter stays simply don't make sense economically.

What are the cancellation terms?

We've kept it simple – just two tiers:

  • More than 60 days before arrival: full refund (100 %)
  • 30 to 60 days before arrival: 50 % refund
  • Less than 30 days before arrival: no refund

Cancellation must be in writing (email or letter). You can also propose a replacement guest who takes over the contract under the same conditions – in that case no cancellation fees apply.

💡 Recommendation: Take out travel cancellation insurance right after booking. Most insurers only accept policies if taken out within one week of booking confirmation.

Arrival & Departure

Where is the house located?

SLAPPE AV is located in a small holiday cottage settlement in Vrådal, in the Telemark region of southern Norway – about 4.5 km from the village centre. Lake Vråvatn is roughly 150 m from the house, and the swimming spot with sandy beach about 300 m away.

More details on the page Location & Surroundings.

When are check-in and check-out?

Unless otherwise agreed:

  • Check-in: from 4:00 pm
  • Check-out: by 11:00 am

The cleaning service needs the time in between to prepare the house for the next guests.

How do I get the key?

The key is in a key safe right at the house. You can pick it up yourself, no detour, no need for anyone to be present – so you're completely flexible with your arrival time. The code for the key safe will be sent to you by email a few days before arrival.

My GPS shows an impassable road – what should I do?

Important note: For the last few hundred metres before the house, many GPS systems show a road that is not actually drivable. The correct turn-off is about 500 m past the exit to Panorama Ski Center when coming from Vrådal – look for the sign "Fiskebekk Hyttegrend" and turn left there.

Step-by-step directions on the page Arrival.

Can I shop on the way?

We even recommend it. The local Joker supermarket in Vrådal is open Monday–Friday until 8:00 pm and Saturday until 6:00 pm, closed on Sundays. Larger Norwegian chains (Kiwi, Rema 1000, Meny) are often open until 10:00 pm on weekdays – if you're arriving late, stopping along the way is often more convenient than driving back into the village afterwards.

More info on the page Shopping Locally.

Is there parking at the house?

Yes. There is space for two to three cars directly on the property.

What do I need to know about tolls and fuel?

Tolls (Bompenger): Norwegian tolls work automatically via licence-plate recognition – just drive through and you'll receive an invoice by post afterwards. We recommend registering with AutoPASS through a European provider (e.g. EPC, Fremtind) before your trip – it's cheaper and you avoid processing fees.

Fuel: Petrol is more expensive in Norway than in most of Europe. At many stations you pay by credit card directly at the pump, often without staff on site. Plain debit cards (especially without Visa or Mastercard branding) are sometimes not accepted – bring a proper credit card to be safe.

Do I need winter tyres?

In winter (roughly November to April), roads are often covered in snow and ice. Norway doesn't have a blanket winter-tyre rule by date, but tyres must be appropriate for the conditions – summer tyres are not allowed when winter conditions apply. For the cold season we recommend proper winter tyres or all-season tyres with M+S marking, and carrying snow chains for longer mountain trips.

The House

How many people does the house accommodate?

The house sleeps up to 8 people in four bedrooms. A baby cot is also available.

Details on the room layout on the page The House & Amenities.

How is the house heated?

The house has two heating systems that complement each other:

  • Electric radiators in every room – individually adjustable, included in the price
  • Wood stove in the living room – for cosy warmth and that real cabin feel. Firewood is purchased separately.

🔥 Warm on arrival: In winter we pre-heat the house for you, so you don't walk into a cold cabin. Just settle in and relax.

How does the sauna work?

The sauna is a classic Finnish-style sauna with an electric heater. Heating time: about 30–45 minutes. A short instruction sheet with safety notes is posted right next to the sauna.

💡 Tip: A jump into Lake Vråvatn (150 m away) after the sauna is the perfect contrast bath – summer or winter. In winter you'll often find open spots for proper ice bathing.

Is there Wi-Fi and TV?

Wi-Fi: Yes, free and available throughout the house. It's not super fast, but more than enough for normal use – including streaming.

TV: The house has a 38-inch television with satellite reception (German ASTRA channels plus a few Norwegian ones).

💡 2026 update: We're gradually moving to internet-based solutions (e.g. Chromecast or Apple TV) during 2026. As part of this, we're installing a broadband connection, which will also significantly speed up the Wi-Fi.

What appliances are in the kitchen?

The kitchen is fully equipped: induction hob, oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, kettle, filter coffee machine, and all common pots, pans and utensils. Crockery and cutlery for 8 people are provided.

There is no microwave – it's not standard in many Norwegian cabins. Reheating works just as well in the oven or on the stovetop.

Bed linen and towels – are they included?

No, please bring your own bed linen and towels. If you'd rather travel light, you can rent both from us for an extra fee – please request at least one week before arrival.

Is there a washing machine?

Yes, a washing machine is available in the house. There is no tumble dryer – in summer you can hang clothes outside, and in winter laundry dries quickly indoors thanks to the dry heated air.

Is the house family-friendly?

Very much so. In addition to the baby cot you'll find high chairs, safety gates (especially important for the staircase) and a box of Duplo bricks. There's sand toys on the terrace. A small swimming spot with sandy beach is just 300 m from the house – very family-friendly. The larger swimming area with climbing frame and playground at Straand Hotel Beach is about 4.5 km away in the village centre.

With Dog

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed. When booking, please tell us the breed, size and number of dogs, so we can decide on a case-by-case basis. In exceptional cases (e.g. several large dogs) we reserve the right to decline – so it's best to ask in advance.

Leash rules – what applies around Vrådal?

The property isn't fenced, but the area is quiet and traffic-free, with woods and walking trails right next door. In summer your dog can also enjoy a swim in Lake Vråvatn.

🐾 Important in Kviteseid: The municipality of Vrådal/Kviteseid has an extended leash requirement ("båndtvang"):

  • 1 April – 20 August: nationwide leash law (to protect wildlife)
  • 21 August – 20 October: local extension (to protect free-grazing livestock – sheep and cattle)

In practice: From 1 April to 20 October dogs must be on a leash or kept in a securely fenced area. Source: Kviteseid Kommune.

What do I need to know about bringing a dog into Norway?

Dogs from EU/EEA countries can enter Norway without quarantine, but strict requirements apply:

  • EU pet passport (or equivalent for non-EU dogs)
  • Microchip (or clearly readable tattoo if applied before 3 July 2011)
  • Valid rabies vaccination
  • Tapeworm treatment with praziquantel: 24–120 hours before entry, recorded in the pet passport by a vet

The tapeworm treatment is mandatory and is checked on a spot basis – non-compliance can lead to quarantine or refusal of entry. Plan your vet appointment in good time before travel.

📋 Official information: The most up-to-date and complete rules are published by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) – rules can change, please verify before your trip.

On Location

What language is spoken locally?

You'll get along perfectly well with English almost everywhere in Norway – Norwegians learn English from primary school and speak it very confidently. In tourism, restaurants and any supermarket you'll have no trouble at all. Norwegian helps but isn't necessary. A few words like "Tusen takk" (Thank you very much), "Hei" (Hello) and "Ha det bra" (Goodbye) are always appreciated by your hosts.

How do I pay locally?

Norway is one of the most card-friendly countries in the world. You can pay with credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard) absolutely everywhere – even for small purchases like a pastry at the bakery. Cash is practically unnecessary. Apple Pay and Google Pay also work everywhere.

Plain debit cards without Visa/Mastercard branding are sometimes not accepted – bring a proper credit card to be safe.

Will my mobile phone work in Norway?

If you have a contract from an EU/EEA country, Norway is part of the EU roaming agreement (even though Norway isn't an EU member) – use your home plan just as you would at home, no extra charge. Includes data, calls and texts.

For UK and non-EU contracts, check with your provider before travelling – roaming surcharges may apply since Brexit. Coverage in the Vrådal valley is good; in the surrounding mountains there are occasional dead spots.

What kind of power sockets does Norway use?

Norway uses European Type F sockets ("Schuko") with 230 V / 50 Hz – the same as Germany, France, Spain and most of continental Europe. UK travellers need a UK-to-EU adapter; US/Canada travellers need both a plug adapter and a voltage converter for non-dual-voltage devices.

Can I drink the tap water?

Yes – and it's excellent. Norwegian tap water is among the best in the world and comes straight from the mountains here. Buying bottled water is a complete luxury – just turn on the tap.

Where do I dispose of waste?

The house has containers for separate waste collection (residual, paper/cardboard, glass/metal, plastic packaging, organic). You take the waste yourself to the collection point at the turn-off to Panorama Ski Center – about 1.2 km by car or 700 m on foot.

Containers in the house must be empty by the time you leave.

Where can I find a pharmacy or doctor?

The nearest pharmacy (Apotek) is in Seljord (about 35 km) with regular weekday opening hours. For prescription medication you may need a Norwegian prescription – so bring a sufficient supply of your own medications.

For medical care see the Emergency block below.

Is smoking allowed?

Smoking is strictly forbidden inside the house. On the terrace you're welcome to smoke – please dispose of cigarette ends in the ashtray, not in nature.

What if something breaks?

It happens, no drama. Damage or defects that affect your stay please report to us immediately so we can react quickly. Smaller issues that don't impact your holiday can be reported at the latest when you check out – that way the next guests find a fully functional house too.

What is "Allemannsretten" (Right of Public Access)?

The Norwegian Right of Public Access ("Allemannsretten") allows you to move freely in nature – to hike, camp, pick berries and mushrooms, even on private land, as long as you're respectful. An English version is available in the info folder at the house. Basic rules:

  • Keep distance from inhabited buildings (at least 150 m)
  • Don't leave any waste behind
  • Open fire in or near forests is forbidden from 15 April to 15 September
  • Mushrooms and berries for personal use are allowed – cloudberries on cultivated land only with the landowner's permission

In an Emergency

What emergency numbers do I need?

The most important emergency numbers in Norway:

  • 110 Fire (Brann)
  • 112 Police (Politi)
  • 113 Ambulance (Ambulanse)
  • 02800 Police – non-emergency

Out-of-hours medical service (Legevakt) for Vrådal:

  • 35 06 82 50 Kviteseid Health Centre – weekdays 8:15 am – 3:15 pm
  • 35 05 00 05 Seljord/Notodden Out-of-Hours Service – evenings, nights & weekends

Important for foreign mobile phones: The widely advertised number 116 117 for out-of-hours medical care only works from Norwegian SIM cards. With your foreign mobile, use the regional 8-digit number (above) instead.

For urgent matters we're also reachable by phone – contact details are on the Contact page and in the guest folder at the house.

What if my car breaks down?

The Norwegian roadside assistance is NAF Veihjelp. Call 08505 within Norway. NAF is partner of many European motoring clubs (German ADAC, Dutch ANWB, etc.) – members of these clubs can use their home-country emergency numbers. For others, NAF assistance is available as a paid service.

Wildlife collision – what to do?

The region has elk (moose), roe deer and red deer – be especially careful at dawn and dusk. In case of a collision:

  1. Secure the accident site (hazard lights, warning triangle, hi-vis vest)
  2. Call 02800 (police, non-emergency) and report the wildlife collision – this is required by law in Norway!
  3. Never approach an injured animal – wildlife rangers will be dispatched
  4. Notify your insurance company
