Kvikk Lunsj (the classic Norwegian chocolate bar – waffle with chocolate, essential on any ski tour and in every mountain cabin), Marzipan, and Board games are the hallmarks of Easter in Norway. Traditionally, Labskaus – a hearty stew – is served, particularly at community gatherings like those at Vrådal Grendehus on May 17. Food is uncomplicated: hearty stew and flatbread. If you're lucky enough to spend Easter at SLAPPE AV, you'll experience Vrådal in a particularly sociable and lively atmosphere. The Vrådal Panorama ski resort is typically open through Easter, sometimes even through late April if snow permits. The trails are well-groomed, restaurants in town are open, streets are full of families in ski outfits, and evenings bring generations together.
💡 Booking tip: Easter is hugely popular across Scandinavia – availability for SLAPPE AV during Easter week is extremely limited. If you want to come at Easter, book 6–12 months in advance.
Fishing Season – When Vråvatn Calls Again
With spring comes the fishing season at Vråvatn and neighboring lakes. The water is still cold and clear, trout are hungry after the long winter, and chances for a good catch are excellent. June is considered one of the best months for fishing in Vrådal, alongside August and September.
Fishing licenses are valid from the moment Vråvatn is ice-free – typically from April, sometimes as early as March. Children under 16 fish free. Fishing licenses range from about 50 NOK for two days to 200 NOK for the entire season and are available at the Tourist Information, Straand Hotel, or online at inatur.no.
🎣 Spring Fishing Tips
In April and May, trout often stay in shallow layers – ideal for fly fishing or spinning from shore. Boat fishing is particularly effective during this time because fish haven't yet retreated to deeper water. Many anglers rent small rowboats on the lake or use access points along the shore.

Ice melts from above and below simultaneously. Before venturing onto ice in March or April, ask the Tourist Information or locals about current ice thickness. Normally, the ice is unsafe to walk on by early April – but in some years it holds longer.
🦮 Leash Law April–August: From April to August, Norway enforces "båndtvang" – dogs must be kept on leash. This applies even when fishing by the shore. It's not meant unkindly, but protects nesting birds and wildlife.

From April onwards, trails in lower elevations (up to 400 metres) gradually open. Mid-May, most marked routes around Vrådal are snow-free and easily walkable. Summit tours to Roholtfjell and Hægefjell (both over 1,000 metres) are best from mid/late May, when snow reliably retreats from higher elevations.
Spring forests offer something no other season repeats: the first green. Birches burst into leaf, mosses glow in rich green, and the forest smells of wet earth, mushrooms, and pure renewal. A walk in early May, shortly after the first warm rain, stays with you – it's worth the plane ticket alone.

Roholtfjell (moderate to challenging, ca. 12–14 km, summit 1,021 m): Classic summit tour with spectacular views over Telemark – but only from mid/late May when higher elevations are snow-free. Hægefjell (similar, ca. 10–12 km, 1,006 m): Slightly less frequented than Roholtfjell, equally impressive. Persvatn Shoreline Walk (easy, ca. 1.5–2 hours): Beautiful walk around the lake with bird-watching opportunities, accessible from mid-April.

If you're in Vrådal in mid-May, you'll experience Norway's most beautiful national holiday in full bloom. May 17 – Syttende mai – is Constitution Day and celebrated across Norway. In small Vrådal, it's not a mass tourism event, but genuine village pride: children in traditional dress (Bunad), flags everywhere, speeches about freedom, traditional Labskaus at the Vrådal community house, and of course strawberry cake afterwards (yes, really – Norwegian strawberry cake on May 17 is almost as important as the day itself). Still Skiing? – Skiing in April and May
Vrådal Panorama ski resort typically stays open through Easter, sometimes even to late April or in particularly snowy years to early May. The Easter week is many Norwegian skiers' favourite week – warm days, long après-ski evenings, and still-good snow.
Spring skiing has its own character: the snow is soft and heavy, the sun hangs high and warms, the après-ski mood is relaxed and cosy. And when you look down from the slopes and see the first green patches – green forests, green meadows – while snow still blankets the heights: that's the feeling of season's end. And somehow also one of the most beautiful hours of the entire winter.
⛷ Spring Skiing – What to Expect
From April onwards, snow becomes softer. You need good skis and should expect that conditions are best in the morning (shortly after lifts open). Afternoons can bring mushy, slow snow. Sun protection is essential – snow reflects brutally, and the sun at 700 metres elevation has real power.

Mornings can still be frosty (0 to 5 °C), midday pleasantly warm (12 to 16 °C). The layer system applies – better to bring too many layers than too few. Waterproof hiking boots are essential in the damp April and May forests. A light rain jacket always handy – spring rain is unpredictable.
