Skiing – Vrådal Panorama Right at Your Door
The Vrådal Panorama Ski Resort is only 2.5 km from the holiday home. The ski area extends from 260 to 740 metres elevation and is normally skiable from December to April. Snow cannons cover most of the terrain – even low-snow winters are no problem.

The resort has a dedicated children's area with two magic carpets (50 m each) and gentle practice slopes. Kids can learn at their own pace – and the area is free to use.

Ski rental for alpine, cross-country, snowboard and Telemark on-site. Child helmets free. The ski school offers group and private lessons for all levels – a major advantage when children are hitting skis for the first time.
Restaurants & Après-Ski
Two restaurants in the resort: Café Utsikten at the top with snacks, burgers and sausages – plus a view over Vråvatn that almost beats the ski run. At the base station, a full restaurant with daily specials, pizza and soups, open on Saturdays too.

Cross-Country Skiing – Silence, Forests, Space
Around Vrådal there are 35 km of groomed trails in various difficulty levels – from flat lakeside routes to longer mountain tours. Many trails are accessible directly from the holiday home settlement.
Classic or skate style – both are possible. What's special about cross-country: unlike alpine skiing, the trails are often empty. The only sound is your skis gliding rhythmically across the snow. That's the opposite of après-ski. That's pure Norway.

Sauna & Fireplace – The Heart of Winter
🔥 The Ritual
The perfect winter day at SLAPPE AV follows a pattern: morning on the slopes or trails. Afternoon back to the warm house. Light the fireplace – wood crackles, smoke smells of forest. Heat the sauna, takes about 45 minutes to reach 95–100 °C. Who dares: step outside barefoot into the snow for a moment. Then back inside to warmth, with hot tea or mulled wine on the sofa.
This isn't a holiday. This is Norway.
The Facilities
The electric sauna in the bathroom seats 3–4 people and heats quickly. The wood-burning fireplace in the open living area is the emotional heart of the house. Morning coffee in front of it, evening with a book from the shelf, or just watching the flames – that's exactly the rhythm SLAPPE AV stands for.
Additionally, underfloor heating in the bathroom keeps showers comfortable even in deep winter. Blackout blinds keep the winter night outside – and warmth inside.
🪵 Firewood: Not included in the rental price; can be purchased in the village. Tip: buy generously on the first day – you'll be grateful on the first cold evening. Keep the wood basket full.
Ice Fishing – When the Lake Freezes Over
In winters with stable frost periods, Vråvatn lake freezes over. Once the ice is solid – around January – ice fishing becomes possible, a Scandinavian winter ritual that can become addictive.
The principle is beautifully simple: drill a hole, drop the line, wait. Trout, pike-perch and char remain active in winter. And the silence on a frozen lake, surrounded by snow-covered forests – that's an experience words cannot capture.
❄️ What You Need
Ice auger, light fishing rod, small bait and above all patience. Equipment can be rented or bought in Vrådal. The same fishing permit applies year-round.
⚠️ Safety: Before venturing onto ice – minimum 10 cm thickness for a single person. Ask locals or the tourist office about current conditions. Thickness varies significantly depending on the winter.
Day Trip: Rjukan – Mirrors, History, Mountains
Rjukan lies roughly 110 km north of Vrådal and is one of Norway's most fascinating places. The story: the valley is so deep that in winter it received no direct sunlight for months. In 2013, Norwegians installed three massive mirrors on the mountainside – Solspeilene – that reflect sunlight into the valley. Entrepreneurship meets poetry.
Krossobahn – The Historic Light Railway
The Krossobahn (built 1928) was originally the daily transport for workers from the dark valley up to the light. Today it's a tourist attraction – and the view from the mountain plateau over snow-covered Telemark is breathtaking. Especially in winter, when everything is white, the true grandeur of the landscape reveals itself.
Gaustatoppen – Norway's Most Iconic Peak
Gaustatoppen (1,883 m) towers directly above Rjukan. On clear days, you can see one-sixth of Norway from here – one of the country's most famous views. In winter it attracts experienced ski tourers; in summer it's a hiking classic.
Vemork – Industrial Museum & WWII History
The former Vemork hydroelectric plant is a UNESCO World Industrial Heritage site and the scene of one of WWII's most dramatic sabotage operations. German occupiers sought to produce heavy water here for atomic weapons – Norwegian resistance fighters foiled these plans in one of the war's most daring operations. The museum is open year-round and tells this story compellingly.
🚗 Rjukan drive: About 110 km / 1.5–2 hours from Vrådal. In winter, always check current road conditions – the route crosses mountain passes. Winter tyres are mandatory.

🚗 Travel & Car
Roads in and around Vrådal are ploughed and gritted, but winter tyres are absolutely essential. Plan significantly more driving time than summer – snow and ice are unpredictable. Slopes to the holiday home have inclines; snow chains can be useful in difficult conditions.
🌙 Short Days, Long Nights
In December and January, darkness falls by 15:00. Plan skiing and excursions so you're back in daylight. The evenings in return are all the cosier – fireplace, sauna, board games, a good book.
🌡️ Temperatures & Clothing
Vrådal can be icy: daytime –5 to –15 °C, nights below –20 °C. The layer system isn't just a recommendation, it's essential. Particularly important: thermal underwear, waterproof boots and gloves that actually keep you warm – not just look good.
✨ Northern Lights – Hope Remains
Vrådal lies too far south for reliable aurora borealis – the main belt starts much further north. But with strong solar activity and clear, dark skies, it's worth looking north. Best chances: far from town lights, right by the lake, around 22:00–01:00.
