Autumn is the underrated season in Vrådal. Fewer tourists, no queues, but a forest that's on fire – in crimson, orange, gold. The air is clearer than in summer, the trails are empty, and literally the best mushrooms in Norway are lying in front of your door. Once you've experienced this moment, you come back.
When the Forest Catches Fire
🍂 September & October in Vrådal
Autumn arrives early in Telemark. From mid-September onwards, the birches begin to glow; by late September, the entire forest becomes a sea of red and gold. The days grow shorter, but the light improves – that soft, slanting autumn light that makes everything slightly unreal and beautiful.
Daytime temperatures range from 5 to 15 °C, with nights dropping below freezing from October onwards. Perfect, then, for active days outdoors and cosy evenings inside – with fireplace, sauna, and the quiet satisfaction that only comes from time in nature.
What makes autumn special: you have Vrådal almost to yourself. The summer tourists have gone, the ski resort hasn't opened yet – for a few weeks, the village belongs to those who know this is the best time of year.
Mushrooms & Berries – Nature's Harvest
In the forests surrounding SLAPPE AV, autumn brings mushrooms and berries in quantities that most Central Europeans can barely believe. Norway's "allemannsretten" (right to roam) allows you to take whatever you find – as long as you act responsibly.
Common and easy to identify. August through October.
Chanterelle
Golden yellow, aromatic. Thrives in damp locations.
Blueberry
Along every path, sweeter than cultivated berries.
Lingonberry
Slightly tart, perfect with wild game dishes.
Cloudberry
Orange, rare, impossibly aromatic – a true treasure.
Black Currant
In clearings and along path edges.
🍳 What You Should Bring
A shallow basket (never plastic bags – mushrooms sweat and spoil), a small knife for clean cutting, and ideally a mushroom guide. Our recommendation: a field guide specific to Norwegian mushrooms.
💡 Allemannsretten (Right to Roam): Picking mushrooms and berries is permitted for everyone in Norway – even on private land, as long as you cause no damage. The full regulations are in the info folder at the cottage.
Hiking in Autumn – Light, Silence, and Views
The hiking trails around Vrådal show themselves at their best in autumn – and are emptier than at any other time of year. The ground is soft, the air smells of damp moss and earth, and from the peaks, you overlook a panorama of glowing forest and dark lake that no photograph can really capture.
The marked routes up Roholtfjellet, Venelifjell and Hægefjell are still easily walkable in September and early October – from mid-October onwards, early snowfalls can make mountain trails unreliable. The flatter routes around the lake become the better choice.
🥾 Autumn Tip: Evening Walk to the Lake
Just before sunset, head to the shore of Vråvatn – when the light turns orange and the lake is mirror-smooth. A 20-minute round trip, and the moment lingers longer than many multi-hour summit hikes.

Fishing in Autumn – Prime Season
August and September are, after June, the best months for fishing in Vråvatn and Nisser. The water cools, trout rise from the depths, and come September, spawning season approaches – then even the largest specimens move into upper water layers.
Whoever spends a week at SLAPPE AV in September and sits fishing early in the morning experiences Vrådal at its most pristine.

Large trout – specimens over 2 kg – are most active in September and early October. Early morning and dusk, when light falls at an angle across the water, offer the highest chances of success.

Simply Being – Fireplace, Books, Silence
Not every holiday needs an itinerary. Autumn at SLAPPE AV might be the perfect time to learn that lesson.
Morning: a long coffee on the terrace, breath misting in the autumn air. Afternoon: a walk by the lake or through the forest. Evening: fireplace on, one of the many books from the shelf – Scandinavian literature, nature books, thrillers – and enjoying the silence, which has a different quality in this season than it does in summer.
The House in Autumn
Sauna, fireplace, underfloor heating in the bathroom – SLAPPE AV is designed for cosy autumn evenings. The blackout blinds that keep out the bright nights in summer create delightful darkness in autumn. And the smell of wood smoke curling through the house in the evening is one of the finest aromatherapies we know.
Culture in Autumn – What Stays Open
Unlike summer, museum season winds down in autumn. Most museums in the Vest-Telemark Museum Association close between mid-August and mid-September. Visitors coming in early autumn still have a few options – from mid-October onwards, offerings are reduced to outdoor viewings.
Open through Mid-September
Vest-Telemark Museum Eidsborg & Stave Church
Modern museum building, open-air museum with over 30 buildings, and the 13th-century Stave Church. Open until 15 September, with guided tours of the church daily at 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00.
Norsk skieventyr Morgedal
The skiing museum in the "cradle of skiing" showcases skiing history, Sondre Norheim's legacy, the South Pole expedition, and the Olympic flame. Open until 15 September.
Seasonal Special: Lock Museum at Småstraum
Slusemuseet ved Småstraum
The small museum right by the lock is only open when the M/S Fram passes through – and she runs until early October. If you time your visit with the Fram's schedule, you can combine the museum visit with watching the lock operation – an experience that's crowded in summer but feels almost intimate in autumn.
Accessible Year-Round
Eidsborg Stave Church – Exterior
Even when the museum is closed, the Stave Church and some historic buildings can be viewed from outside year-round. In autumn light – with dark timber walls set against glowing birches – this is perhaps the most beautiful moment to visit.
Kviteseid Bygdetun – Outdoor Grounds
The Bygdetun itself opens only until 15 August. The outdoor grounds with historic wooden buildings and the old stone church of Kviteseid, however, remain freely accessible – ideal for a quiet walk away from the season's crowds.
