At the end of a quiet side road

The holiday home sits at the end of a quiet side road in Vrådal, about 4.5 kilometres west of the village centre. There is no through-traffic – the road effectively ends at the house. To get into the village, your best bet is the car or the bike; on foot it’s a fair walk.

It’s about 150 metres down to the shore of lake Vråvatn. The Vråvatn is long, deep and clear – ideal for swimming, fishing and boating in spring and summer, a still mirror of clouds and autumn forest later in the year. In winter it usually freezes over and opens up new options: ice fishing, walks across the white expanse, sometimes even cross-country skiing.

The plot itself is open and naturally landscaped, just as the area’s character calls for. Other holiday homes are within sight, but you rarely hear anything from them. A short walk from the house takes you straight into the forest – and there, in summer, you’ll find blueberries and raspberries, in autumn ceps and chanterelles.

Vrådal – a small village with everything you need

Vrådal is small but well equipped. The village centre is around seven minutes away by car, or just over fifteen minutes by bike. What you’ll find there:

• Cirkel petrol station
• Hotel & Restaurant Straand – a popular meeting point in the region, with restaurant and café
• Bathing area with climbing tower, playground and kiosk – directly below the Straand hotel by the lake
• Vrådal Villmark & Fritid – sports and outdoor shop with everything for life outside
• Sølvsmetunet – jewellery, Christmas decorations and gifts
• Vrådal Suvenir – souvenirs
• GK Restaurant og kafé
• Den lille salong – hairdresser

For larger shops or more variety, the towns of Kviteseid and Seljord are about 20 to 35 minutes by car.

What awaits you within a few kilometres

A lot of what you might want to do on holiday is within easy reach:

Right on the doorstep

Around 20 kilometres of signposted Nordic walking trails at various difficulty levels start in the immediate area. Several marked hiking trails lead up into the uplands around Vrådal – including routes to viewpoints such as Roholtsfjell. Right next to the house lies the small bay of Linstø, and just a short way along the lakeshore the bay of Klokkarbukti. Detailed leaflets are kept in the house.

Vrådal Panorama ski resort – 3 km

The family-friendly ski resort is just a few minutes by car and offers slopes for every level, plus cross-country tracks running through snow-covered forest.

Vrådal golf course – 5 km

A picturesque 9-hole course set in the Telemark landscape, perfect for a relaxed round in holiday mood.

Småstraum lock museum – 3.5 km

The old lock at Småstraum lies just a few kilometres away. The associated museum tells the story of how shipping and timber rafting were organised across these lakes in the early 20th century. Open in the summer season.

The historic boat M/S Fram

The veteran boat M/S Fram was built in 1909 as a wooden tug and today sets out from Vrådal as an excursion ship in the summer months. A relaxed way to see the lakes from the water.

Fishing in the Vråvatn

Viewpoints further afield

If you’re keen to explore by car, several quieter spots are worth the trip: the outflow at Vråliosen, and the area around Fyresdal, which opens up an entirely different valley landscape – with marked picnic spots and the imposing Vikfjell nearby. The dramatic Ravnejuv viewpoint and the Skinnarbu plateau are slightly more of a drive, but rewarding day trips.

Telemark – the storybook side of Norway

Telemark is one of Norway’s most varied regions: deep forests, high uplands, long lakes, small valleys with old farmsteads. Holidaying here doesn’t give you the postcard fjord-Norway, but something quieter and more original.

One of the region’s defining features is the Telemark Canal, a historic waterway with 18 locks completed in 1892, today travelled by excursion ships in the summer. Telemark also has plenty to offer culturally – a few highlights:

• Morgedal – the “cradle of skiing”, with its ski museum (approx. 29 km)
• Eidsborg stave church – one of the best-preserved in Norway (approx. 50 km)
• Heddal stave church – the largest in the country (approx. 80 km)
• Vemork industrial museum in Rjukan – UNESCO World Heritage site centred on the WW2 heavy water sabotage (approx. 110 km)
• Kongsberg silver mine – one of Europe’s historically most important silver mines (approx. 110 km)
